In the beginning of March, the Allendale Police Department noticed a pattern of shopliftings taking place at a local supermarket. These thefts occurred late at night with alcohol being the targeted merchandise. Upon conferring with corporate loss prevention, it was determined that two individuals, identified as Michael Basile and Laura Probst were perpetrating the thefts. Based on information obtained, it was determined that Mr. Basile and Ms. Probst were responsible for fourteen (14) separate thefts from March 4th until present time. The Allendale Police Detective Bureau worked with loss prevention and performed surveillance inside the store. Both subjects were apprehended while committing a shoplifting in the early morning hours of 04/16/2015. During the apprehension, both defendants were found to have drug paraphernalia on their person. Mr. Basile, a 26 year-old Allendale resident, and Ms. Probst, a 21 year-old Allendale resident, were charged with a total of twenty-eight (28) criminal charges for shoplifting and narcotics related offenses. Mr. Basile was charged with fifteen (15) shoplifting offenses, one (1) Conspiracy offense and one (1) Possession of drug paraphernalia offense. Ms. Probst was charged with eleven (11) shoplifting offenses, and one (1) Possession of drug paraphernalia offense. At the time of apprehension, the total loss to the merchant was $3,344.72. Mr. Basile and Ms. Probst were remanded to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack in lieu of $21,000 bail each.
